Look, I’m Sick of the Hype
Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been around the tech block a time or two. Twenty-three years, to be exact. And I’m sick of the AI hype. It’s like the California gold rush all over again, but this time, it’s not gold we’re digging for—it’s algorithms. And honestly? I think we’re all gonna come up empty-handed.
I remember back in ’99, when I was working at Tech Monthly with this guy, let’s call him Marcus. We were covering the dot-com boom. Marcus was convinced every startup was the next big thing. Spoiler alert: they weren’t. And now? It’s the same damn thing with AI.
Just last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. Some hotshot CEO—let’s call him Dave—was up on stage, talking about how his AI was gonna revolutionize the world. I mean, come on. I turned to my friend Sarah and said, “Sarah, this is just like the dot-com boom all over again.” And she looked at me and said, “I know, right? But it’s making people alot of money.” Which… yeah. Fair enough. But that doesn’t make it any less of a bubble.
But Here’s the Thing
I’m not saying AI isn’t cool. It is. I’m not saying it doesn’t have its uses. It does. But I am saying that we’re all jumping on the bandwagon without thinking about the long-term committment we’re making. We’re so busy chasing the next big thing that we’re forgetting to ask the important questions.
Take my friend Lisa, for example. She’s a cybersecurity expert. I was over at her place last month, and she was showing me this new AI she’s working on. It’s supposed to detect threats before they happen. “That’s amazing,” I said. “But what about the physicaly implications? What about the people who are gonna lose their jobs because of this?” She looked at me like I was crazy. “That’s not my problem,” she said. And that’s the issue right there.
And Don’t Even Get Me Started on the Gadgets
Oh, you know what I’m talking about. The smart fridges, the AI vacuum cleaners, the whatever-the-hell-else they’re selling now. I was at the store the other day, and I saw this AI-powered toaster. A TOASTER. I mean, come on. What’s next? AI-powered toilet paper?
But look, I get it. Gadgets are fun. They’re shiny. They’re new. And people love them. But we need to be smarter about what we’re buying. We need to think about the long-term succesfully of these devices. We need to think about the impact they’re gonna have on our lives. And we need to stop buying into the hype.
If you’re gonna buy a gadget, do your research. Check out gadget reviews detailed analysis. Read the fine print. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t buy a smart toaster.
A Tangent: The Time I Tried to Build an AI
So, about three months ago, I decided to try my hand at building an AI. I mean, how hard could it be, right? Wrong. So wrong. I spent 36 hours straight in my basement, surrounded by empty energy drinks and half-eaten pizza, trying to get this damn thing to work. And you know what? It didn’t. It was a complete failure. But you know what I learned? I learned that AI isn’t some magic bullet. It’s not gonna solve all our problems. It’s just another tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it.
So, What’s the Solution?
I’m not sure. Honestly, I don’t think there is one. But I do know this: we need to stop chasing the next big thing. We need to start thinking about the long-term. We need to start asking the tough questions. And we need to stop buying into the hype.
I’m not saying we should abandon AI. I’m saying we should be smarter about it. We should think about the implications. We should think about the impact. And we should stop treating it like it’s gonna save the world.
So, that’s my take. Take it or leave it. But please, for the love of all that is holy, stop buying smart toasters.
