Look, I’m a Tech Enthusiast, But…
Okay, full disclosure: I’ve been in this industry since before the dot-com boom. I remember when we had to explain what the internet was to our mothers. So yeah, I’m kinda old. But I’m not a dinosaur. I get excited about tech. I really do.
But honestly? I’m so over this chatbot craze. It’s everywhere. Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin, and it was like everyone had lost their minds. All anyone could talk about was their new AI sidekick. I mean, come on. It’s like the gold rush all over again, but this time we’re panning for algorithms.
I get it. AI is cool. It’s powerful. It’s changing things. But it’s not the only thing. There’s so much more happening in tech right now. But no, we have to talk about chatbots. Again.
Let’s Talk About Something Else
So, let’s pivot. Let’s talk about something else. Like, have you seen what’s happening with quantum computing? No? Of course not. Because everyone’s too busy playing with their new AI toys.
I had coffee with a colleague named Dave last month. He’s a quantum physicist. Yeah, I know, fancy, right? Anyway, he was telling me about this breakthrough they had. Something about qubits and error correction. I didn’t understand half of it, but it was fascinating. And important. Way more important than another chatbot.
But does anyone care? Nope. Because we’re too busy arguing about whether AI is gonna take our jobs or not. Spoiler alert: it’s not. Well, not anytime soon. But that’s a conversation for another time.
The Problem with Hype
Here’s the thing about hype. It’s blinding. It makes us forget about the real issues. Like cybersecurity. Remember that? Yeah, that thing we were all freaking out about a few years ago. Well, it’s still a problem. A big one.
I was at a dinner party a few weeks ago. There was this guy there, let’s call him Marcus. He’s a cybersecurity expert. He was telling me about this new threat they’re seeing. Something about AI-powered hacking. Yeah, you read that right. Our shiny new toys are being used against us. But do we hear about that on the news? No. Because it’s not sexy. It’s not trending. It’s not trending topics popular discussions.
Marcus said something that stuck with me. He said, “We’re so busy chasing the next big thing, we’re forgetting to fix the things that are broken.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
A Personal Anecdote
Let me tell you a story. A few years back, I was working on this project. It was a big deal. We were building this new platform. It was gonna be huge. Or so we thought.
We poured everything into it. Time, money, resources. We even hired this hotshot AI consultant. He was the best in the business. Or so they said. He promised us the moon. Told us his AI was gonna revolutionize everything. We believed him. Why wouldn’t we? Everyone else was doing it.
So, we integrated his AI into our platform. And you know what happened? Nothing. Well, not nothing. It was a disaster. The AI was supposed to learn from user behavior. Instead, it just kept making the same mistakes over and over again. It was like teaching a dog to fetch, but the dog just kept bringing back the leash.
In the end, we had to scrap the whole thing. We lost a lot of money. We lost a lot of time. And we lost a lot of faith in AI. But not in tech. Never in tech. Just in the hype.
What’s the Point?
I don’t know. I guess the point is, we need to be careful. We need to be smart. We need to remember that tech is more than just the shiny new thing. It’s about solving problems. It’s about making things better. It’s about the physicaly tangible impact we can have on the world.
So, let’s talk about AI. Let’s talk about its potential. But let’s also talk about the other stuff. The stuff that’s not getting the attention it deserves. Because if we don’t, we’re gonna wake up one day and realize we’ve been left behind. Again.
Anyway, that’s my rant. I’m gonna go now. I’ve got a meeting with a guy who’s working on something called “neuromorphic engineering.” No, I don’t know what that is either. But it sounds cool. And it’s not a chatbot. So, there’s that.
About the Author:Hi, I’m Sarah. I’ve been writing about tech for longer than I care to admit. I’ve seen trends come and go, and I’ve learned one thing: the only constant in tech is change. I’m a skeptic, an optimist, and a realist all rolled into one. I love this industry, but I’m not afraid to call out its flaws. Because that’s how we grow. That’s how we get better. And that’s how we make sure tech is a force for good.
